Dentistry
Dental disease is a common finding in pets over five years of age. Bacteria in the mouth produce a sticky film on the teeth called plaque. Plaque that is allowed to remain on the teeth will eventually be converted to tartar, a hard, yellow, bacteria laden matrix that covers the teeth, and often the gums (gingiva). Health concerns regarding dental disease are not only related to infections in the mouth. These disease causing bacteria spread by way of the bloodstream potentially infecting healthy organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys.
At Kildaire Animal Medical Center, we can increase the quality and length of your pets' life by taking steps to minimize the build-up of bacteria in the mouth. Our veterinarians can evaluate your pets' mouth, and if there are signs of dental disease, prescribe appropriate therapy to achieve a healthy mouth. We have a full line of dental services and products to properly clean and reduce the buildup of plaque and tartar.
A common concern of pet owners is the use of general anesthesia for the dental cleaning and evaluation, but with the right precautions, the benefits of a Prophylactic Dental Cleaning more than outweigh the risks.
Ask one of our Team Members for more information about dental hygiene and what you can do to help keep your pets' mouth clean and healthy.
